Oil Spill Update for Fort Myers Beach on May 22nd 2010

Oil Spill Update video for Southwest Florida’s Estero Bay Fort Myers Beach

Oil Spill News (Friday May 7th, 2010)

At this time, there has been no impact to Florida’s 2,276 miles of tidal shoreline, 1,197 miles of coastline and 663 miles of beaches.  According to local officials, Wednesday, May 12th  is likely to be an important day. The reports due out should give a higher probability of what to expect from this disaster. The likelihood(s) of what areas will become affected will be better known on Wednesday (of course the caveat of “no guarantees” was given). – Captain Mark

Sunday Trip to the Everglades

We took a day trip to the Everglades yesterday and let me tell you I highly recommend you take a day out of your vacation to see what many consider the 8th wonder of the world.

One of our favorite stops was the Wildlife Exhibit at the Trail Lakes Campground.  For a couple dollars donation, the tour guide, Rick will walk you through and allow you to hold and or touch snakes, lizards, aligators, birds, iguanas, turtles, and a host of other creatures.

The address to this amazing place is 40904 Tamiami Trail, Ochopee, FL 34134.

Telephone number is 239-695-2275 (be sure to call ahead and make sure Rick is working)

Spanish Dancers

Also known as Sea Hares or Sea Slugs have been washing up on our beaches for the last week.  The purple dye is a defense mechanism.

Eagles and Ospreys

First Mate Terresa captured some great photo’s yesterday in Estero Bay.  As you can see the baby ospreys are finally hatching!  Looking at the photo’s of the Bald Eagles is uplifting and inspiring.  We are so fortunate to live here…

Bald Eagle

Terresa got a couple of great photos of this Bald Eagle.  After it flew off the marker pole, it flew over to a fish hawk which was carrying a freshly caught fish and slammed into it, knocking the fish out of its grip and the fish fell all the way to the water less than fifty feet from the boat.  The eagle then flew back to it’s perch on the marker pole showing no interest in the fish.  Terresa said it was as if the eagle must have done it to show its power over the osprey.

Below is an excerpt from a letter Ben Franklin wrote his daughter about the Bald Eagle:

“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.”

Ben Franklin went on to tell his daughter that the Wild Turkey would have been a better choice as our National symbol:

“I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.”

After the fish hawk!

Hope you love history as much as we do and as always thanks for checking out the Captain’s Blog!

This great footage of our resident flock of white ibis.  They are considered the “gardener’s friend” because they eat all the grubs and other pests out of our yards.  I think this is a grub that gets eaten.

Interesting Tidbits about Fort Myers Beach

The following excerpt from the Fort Myers News Press has some cool facts about Fort Myers Beach:

Fort Myers Beach has been a treasured hideaway for generations of visitors, island natives and tourists. Originally called Crescent Beach, the Gulf-side community located on sand-packed Estero Island began marketing itself early to those who felt a chilly wind “up north.”  From “wide sand for driving” (1920s and ’30s) to “safest beach in the world” (1960s), many claims have been made for the island, all of them true.

In the 1930s, among the attractions pitched to visitors was a popular casino, but when gambling became a no go, beach boosters launched an energetic campaign in pictures and postcards, making everything from its sea cottages to its fishing pier to its shrimp fleet look like part of a tropical Shangri-La.

And for those who’ve called the beach their own, for a day or a lifetime, it still looks like one.

The manatees are finally back!!!

The gulf is really starting to warm up.  It is 70 degrees today, which is a far cry from the 54 we had a few weeks ago.  Even the manatees are starting to show their faces again.

The manatees are back!!!

Scarlet is Back

Our Resident Scarlet Ibis is truly a “snowbird“. She shows up late December and stays around until about mid March. Then she is gone, just like most of our neighbors.

A Foggy Sunday Morning

Woke up today to a foggy morning. We have a private charter for 6 this afternoon. Fourteen knot winds from the east should dissipate the fog by mid-morning.

Fantastic Winter Shelling!!!

Booty

The shelling lately has been “off the charts”  We are finding so many wonderful “winter shells”  Yes we must admit it is still a little chilly(today’s high was 74), but is worth it!!!

Terresa counted 15 dolphins at one time today!!!

Final Charter of 2009!!!

It was our afternoon charter on the last day of the year. We were actually heading back into the marina when we spotted another pod of dolphins. These dolphins were not going to let the year end without putting on one final dolphin show to top all shows! AMAZING!!!
The expression on Julie’s face tells the story…

Manatees and Cold Weather

Manatees and cold water just don’t do very well together.  They cannot take water temperatures much less than 60 degrees for any length of time. Our current water temp here is 54. Average water temp this time of the year is 66. Tomorrow nights low of 31 and Sunday’s 32 will push water temps even lower.

Florida’s manatees have 10 power plants and 4 warm springs in the area where they can find warmer water. I hope they all made it to those spots. In 1989 61 manatees died during a similar cold spell.

Please think “good thoughts” for our gentle giants during this cold spell.

These manatees are “thermoregulating” at a warm spring named “Blue Spring”

Great day of Dolphins and Shelling!!!!

Captain Steve and First Mate Terresa said that this afternoon was simply a gorgeous day in paradise!!!
2009 has been AMAZING and we cannot wait to see what 2010 has in store!!!!
